This is my youngest daughter, Ava.  I felt that I needed to share the conversation she and I had after a school field trip today.
Ava: Mommy, we saw Princesses skating on the ice!!
Me: Wow!!  Did you have fun?
Ava: Yeah, but there is a best part!!
Me: What was it?
Ava: We got to meet the Princesses and I asked Snow White if she had a boyfriend.
Me: (Laughing) Did you?  What did she say?
Ava: She said she did and then she asked me if I had one!! And I said I had one, but I didn’t like him any more.
Me: Oh.  Well, how come you don’t like him anymore?
Ava: Because I like my other friend now and then I got scared and asked her if I could still be a princess and she asked why so I told her that my friend I like is a girl and I want to have a girlfriend.
Me: (a bit surprised) Oh.  Ok, well what did she tell you?
Ava: That’s the best part!  She said that as long as I have love I already AM a Princess!!

PLEASE DAD STOP SMOKING FOR YOUR CHILD! DON’T LET THEM WATCH YOU ROT AWAY IN THE HOSPITAL.
My mother died in March from lung cancer. As a parent your job is to protect your child. You can’t call yourself a parent while you weaken your body and mind from a disgusting addiction…. It took my mother 10 final days in the hospital to finally shut all the way. After several strokes, thrush, dementia, her foot had already started breaking down on the inside before she passed away… She became mute after the first three days. But up until day 8 she would squeeze your hand so hard you had to beg her to stop… Hardly any of you have any idea what that feels like. Watching your mother rot away in front of you, she can’t talk, she can barely turn her head to acknowledge your prescense. She weighed about 70 to 80 pounds when she finally let go.
Seeing your parent like that is not okay.
PLEASE MYSTERYDAD, DON’T LET YOUR BABY SEE YOU LIKE THAT. I BEG YOU.
CANCER IS NOT PRETTY.
CANCER IS NOT EASY.
CANCER IS NOT A FUCKING JOKE.

The second picture shows Raya, a Nahua elder. More than half of his people were wiped out after their land was opened up for oil exploration, Peru.

UNCONTACTED INDIGENOUS PEOPLES IN PERU

Survival estimates there are 15 uncontacted tribes in Peru. All of them live in the most remote, isolated regions of the Amazon rainforest.

They include the Cacataibo, Isconahua, Matsigenka, Mashco-Piro, Mastanahua, Murunahua (or Chitonahua), Nanti and Yora.

All of these peoples face terrible threats – to their land, livelihoods and, ultimately, their lives. If nothing is done, they are likely to disappear entirely.

Uncontacted tribes are extremely vulnerable to any form of contact with outsiders because they do not have immunity to Western diseases.

International law recognises the Indians’ land as theirs, just as it recognises their right to live on it as they want to.

That law is not being respected by the Peruvian government or the companies who are invading tribal land.

Uncontacted for good reason

Everything we know about these isolated Indians makes it clear they seek to maintain their isolation.

On the very rare occasions when they are seen or encountered, they make it clear they want to be left alone.

Sometimes they react aggressively, as a way of defending their territory, or leave signs in the forest warning outsiders away.

The Indians have suffered horrific violence and diseases brought by outsiders in the past. For many this suffering continues today. They clearly have very good reason not to want contact.

What can we do about it?

Survival is urging the Peruvian government to protect these isolated Indians by not allowing any oil exploration, logging or other form of natural resource extraction on their land.

The government must recognise the Indians as the owners of their land.

After a Survival campaign in the 1990s, in collaboration with local indigenous organisation FENAMAD, the oil company Mobil pulled out of an area inhabited by uncontacted tribes in south-east Peru.

Please help us fight for the rights of the world’s most vulnerable peoples.

Act now to help the Uncontacted Indians of Peru

Your efforts are crucial in defending the Uncontacted Tribes. Get involved in this urgent effort in the following ways.

Follow Up of the Day: Crafty hackers last night managed to hijack the official website of embattled breast-cancer charity Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and express their dismay at the organization’s politically expedient decision to pull Planned Parenthood grants funding breast-cancer screenings for uninsured and underinsured low-income patients.
The switch was simple, but the message was clear: A banner previously calling women to join a run aimed at ridding the world of breast cancer now read “help us run over poor women on our way to the bank.”
The hack, which briefly redirected www.komen.org visitors to ww5.komen.org, was only the first in a series of notable developments that have taken place since the charity announced its controversial grant withdrawal on Tuesday.
Planned Parenthood, which called out Komen for bowing to “political pressure,” has managed to raise nearly $1 million from online donations and generous contributions from deep-pocketed supporters such as NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
That number, which is continuing to rise, is nearly as much as Komen gave the nonprofit in 2010 and 2011 combined.
Pressure on Komen to reverse its decision is also mounting. 22 Democratic Senators have reportedly signed a strongly worded letter calling on Komen to resume its partnership with Planned Parenthood.
Additionally, Komen’s top public health official, Mollie Williams, has resigned to protest her employer’s defunding decision. The executive director of Komen’s Los Angeles County chapter has also stated her intention to resign.
For its part, Komen continues to deny anti-abortion links to its decision, despite their anti-choice SVP Karen Handel’s well-established goal to defund Planned Parenthood. (Handel recently retweeted a remark critical of Planned Parenthood that concluded with the phrase “cry me a freaking river.” The retweet was soon deleted.)
The organization is further denying its deletion of pro-Planned Parenthood comments from its Facebook page and message board, claiming it only removes comments for profanity.
One poignant comment Komen couldn’t delete was left by award-winning author Judy Blume on her Twitter feed: ”Susan Komen would not give in to bullies or to fear. Too bad the foundation bearing her name did. Support @PPact. Save lives.”
When even Judy Blume is calling you out, you should probably stop and listen.

What The Kids Are Eating of the Day: Ruled not good enough by America’s largest fast-food chains, the so-called “pink slime” — meat and meat by-products treated with ammonia — is still A-OK by U.S. Department of Agriculture standards.
In fact, the USDA will reportedly purchase over 7 million pounds of the gunk to turn into hamburgers and tacos for cafeterias feeding America’s schoolchildren.
McDonald’s, Burger King, and Taco Bell were all persuaded to stop using ammonia-treated meat after the practice of rinsing dog-grade meat with ammonia to wash away harmful bacteria was brought to the attention of consumers by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.
“We’re taking a product that would be sold in its cheaper form for dogs,” said Oliver on his TV show Food Revolution. “After this process, we can give it to humans.”
But a USDA spokesman said there were no plans to stop using pink slime as part of the national school lunch program.
“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration as well as the Food Safety and Inspection Service considers ammonium hydroxide as ‘generally recognized as safe,’” said the spokesman, Aaron Lavallee. “FSIS reviewed the suitability of Beef Products Inc.’s use of ammonium hydroxide in order to assess its effectiveness in performing the intended technical purpose of use, at lowest level necessary, and to ensure that the product is not adulterated or misleading to consumers.”
However, since ammonia beef falls outside the jurisdiction of federal labeling requirements, parents have no way of knowing what exactly is being served to their kids.
